Estate Tours

Established in 1909, Coombe is the home of iconic soprano Dame Nellie Melba. Take a guided tour and explore seven acres of Melba's stunning gardens or discover Coombe Cottage, which remains in its original condition.

The gardens can only be accessed as part of a guided tour. Walking through the gardens without a guide is not permitted. Please book a garden tour for any access to the gardens.

Melba's Garden

Designed by William Guilfoyle, the architect of the Victorian Royal Botanic Gardens, and established over 100 years ago; our seven acres of stunning gardens provide an evocative and romantic setting for wanderings, weddings, private events and many a photograph.

Behind the six hundred metres of Cypress hedge, lie a succession of terraced lawns, native, Italian and vegetable gardens, a croquet lawn, a former grass tennis court, a newly established Rose Arbour and the oldest swimming pool in Victoria.

The gardens contain many rare plants and beautiful old world trees - such as the breathtaking English oak, believed to be over 180 years old, majestically spanning the breadth of the courtyard; and the rambling beauty of the wisteria when in full bloom, elegantly tumbling over areas of the house and Garden.

Experience Melba's Garden on a guided tour.

Be guided through the stunning gardens surrounding Coombe Cottage on a walking tour for approximately one hour.

Please note:
The walk route follows unsealed and sometimes uneven pathways. It is not undercover, and there are no toilets along the route.

Please ensure you wear suitable footwear and are capable of standing and walking unaided for the full duration of the walk (or bring a wheelchair and a companion capable of pushing the wheelchair for the entire duration of the tour). Bring umbrellas for shade and rain protection if required and also bring drinking water – particularly in hot weather.

Coombe Cottage

Dame Nellie Melba was the most famous woman in the world when she chose Coombe Cottage to be her Australian Home.

Melba purchased the sixty-acre dairy farm in 1909, renaming the property Coombe Cottage after a house she had rented in England while she was performing at Covent Garden.

Coombe Cottage is still the private residence of Melba’s family and was the home of Melba’s grandaughter Pamela Lady Vestey until she died in 2011.
